In the four years between the publication of Indecenze di Sorcier ( Sorcier's indecencies ) in 1978, and 1982, Enzo Striano writes Il resto di niente ( The remains of nothing ) . Starting from 1983 the novel is sent to several publishers. Some send the manuscript back without even examining it, some other seem interested at it but are perplexed as well because of the size and the specificity of the subject, and differ a definite response. In 1986 Striano decides not to wait longer and Il resto di niente would be published by the school publisher Loffredo, who had previously published some innovative and successful school books by Striano himself.
The novel gains critical appraisal and the favor of the public, so that in few days it is reprinted many tines and figures in the hit parade of the best sellers in the major national newspapers. In Naples it is considered an important element to reconstruct the historical identity of the town. It is not a case that the title of the novel Il resto di niente becomes a sort of slogan or metaphor in the many letters sent to the Neapolitan daily newspaper «Il Mattino» by many enthusiastic readers between the late Eighties (Striano is already dead in June 1987) and the early Nineties. It is a spontaneous phenomena that could be studied according to the paradigms of literature sociology.
In an interview released to «Uomini e Libri» [E. Striano, Il romanzo è l'unico genere letterario in divenire ( The novel is the only in progress literary gender ) , in «Uomini e Libri», XXII 1986, n. 110, p. 51], Striano seemed to know instinctively that his novel is meant especially to a public willing to better understand Naples, aware of the necessity to seek in the past, far beyond naturalism and manierism, the roots of the present times.
Il resto di niente , analyzes the historical moment of 1799, when in Naples capital of the Reign of Due Sicilie, few intellectuals inspired by Enlightment and by the French revolution, try to carry out the project of the ambitious and fragile Repubblica Partenopea (Neapolitan republic). Together with Cuoco, Lomonaco, Cirillo, Pagano, Serra, Caracciolo, Ciaia, De Deo, Fasulo and many others, Eleonora de Fonseca Pimentel, Portuguese aristocrat, accomplishes her destiny, becoming a citoyen and a journalist, founder and director of the revolutionary journal «Monitore Napoletano».
The author follows Eleonora' s life in the trace of the big historical events: at first attentive, curious little child, exploring Rome, the Italian town where she comes to live with her family exile from Portugal, then adolescent in Naples, sure that she would never leave this town.
Wise understanding, gentle indifference, most of all, supreme feeling of life, between pity and disillusion. All (from the great and noble to the futile and mean) would seem inestimably precious and, at the same time, would be worthless.
This is the moment when Eleonora starts to become an intellectual, establishes cultural relationships exchanging ideas with the major minds of the time and starts a career as a poet . >>>>>>>>
